DESCRIPTION

27 th April 2014 marked the 20 years of freedom and democracy in South Africa. Every year, on that day is a time when all South Africans celebrate past achievements and remember to reflect on the paths that led to this historic occasion. The South African Mint Company is proud to issue the R 200 (1 oz) pure gold coin as a way of paying tribute to a free and democratic South Africa.

The R 200 coin commemorates the first non-racial and democratic elections of 27th April 1994 by portraying former President Nelson Mandela with a group of voters standing in line. Mr Mandela cast his first vote at the Ohlange High School in Inanda KwaZulu- Natal.

The R2 crown features South Africa’s national flag which was first used on the 27th April 1994. Designed by former South African State Herald, Mr Fred Brownell, the flag represents diverse elements coming together within South Africa’s society.

The official 20 Years of Freedom logo is featured on the proof-quality R 5  circulation commemorative coin which, together with the coins of pure gold and sterling silver, celebrates the South African story.
