Description:
Paul Kruger Died in 1904 and the 2004 Krugerrand commemorates his death by a hundred year issue in this set, with the mintmark of the Statesman’s signature on the 1oz.
Paul Kruger was responsible for the introduction of Africa’s first legal coinage on which the present day Krugerrand is based.
Paul Kruger, a resilient and resourceful leader, was elected president of the then ZUID AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK ( South African Republic )in 1883, and was re-elected in 1888, 1893 and 1898. The Republic was situated in the old Transvaal area (today called Gauteng) and the Witwatersrand is located in this region. The discovery of this rich main reef in 1886 changed the history of South Africa by introducing an era of unprecedented expansion with many opportunities. People came from all over the world in search of gold and riches, and to work in the mines established from these discoveries.
Included in this special launch set is a silver medallion which is a replica of the Funeral Medal commemorating Paul Kruger’s death. The medal was issued in South Africa in December 1904. It is also relevant that the chosen mintmark on the 2004 Krugerrand depicts the signature of this well know and feared Boer statesman
